National Bank of Malawi (NBM), a subsidiary of conglomerate Press Corporation Limited (PCL), on Wednesday donated MK1 million towards the Institute of Bankers' (IOB) first-ever Annual Lake Conference to be held this weekend in Mangochi.
Speaking during the presentation of the cheque in Blantyre, NBM corporate Affairs Manager, Annie Magola said commercial banks play a key role in driving the economy of the country and it is important that they gather from time to time to share ideas that are pertinent to the development of the country.
She said: "As one of the leading commercial banks in the country and trendsetter, National Bank saw it fit to make a contribution towards this first-ever bankers' lake conference.
"Important issues that affect us as a bank and the whole banking industry will be tackled at length in a more relaxed environment".
IOB Executive Director, Lyness Nkungula thanked National Bank for the donation saying it will go a long way in making the maiden lake conference a success.
"We are facing so many problems and we thought it wise to engage all banks to find solutions. In 2013 there were 13 banks, but now there are 10. The economy is not good and we have to find solutions", she said.
The theme for the conference is 'Banking industry in turbulent times: What does it take to survive'.
The conference starts today and ends tomorrow.
